DCI 2002 Opening Ceremonies
The ramblings, rants, and sometime epiphanies of a seemingly unfocused and highly anal retentive native California chick who spends a lot of time reflecting about the randomness of things, especially life. Warning, there's lots of soul searching and whiney self-discovery ahead. This blog is rated R ... for random.

After talking to him for no less than three consecutive days about it, Chris forgot to put the garbage and recycle cans out on the curb for collection this morning. Again. I gritted my teeth, counted my blessings (cuz the garbage truck hadn't come yet), thought about doing it myself for the 48th time in 50 weeks …. but in the end decided I wasn’t gonna’ wrestle all three heavy cans to the curb in my work-wear and I knocked on his door and reminded him … nicely … really.

Plain and simple, 2008 was a landmark year for me as a wife, a mom, a woman, and even as a human being. It was life changing year I want to remember for reasons good and bad so I'm writing down some superficial tidbits here to help me remember it.

Judas watches Teddy in awe

I've never understood why people get so passionate and work so hard to prevent someone else from doing something simply because they themselves don't like it, don't agree with it, don't need it, or don't understand it. Gay marriage, abortion, shoot even sex changes and permanent eye liner are all things I will never, ever have a use for but I would NEVER eliminate someone else's right to choose those things. I wouldn't because freedom and equality are the foundation on which our country is built. "We the people" are supposed to be prepared to defend our freedoms TO THE DEATH just like so many of those who came before us. Not give them up because we're afraid of terrorists, or child molesters, or drunk drivers, or spit on them because they inconveniently don't suit our own personal belief system. If freedoms can be taken away from someone else, then they can also be taken away from me ... and you.
Moving at the speed of a comet, I threw my phone, lunch, keys and outgoing mail into in my free-to-me-thanks-to-Office-Depot purse/briefcase/and everything else bag, struggled into a sweater while delicately balancing a coffee cup and threw myself into the driver’s seat a mere 20 minutes from the time my feet hit the floor this morning. Ten minutes later I was at my desk and ready to roll. This is my normal routine in the land of rednecks, and today I realized with a shock that it’s the identical routine my Mom had back in the 70s when she was a woman in a man’s job … back when I was taking at least an hour every morning making myself glamorous for high school boys of all things. I vividly remember giving my mom a hard time – all the time - about how she dressed, wore no make up, always wore tennies, blah, blah, blah. She always just laughed me off. What I didn’t know then is really just what I didn’t know then. That those precious extra ten minutes provided by the snooze button in your own warm bed are far sweeter than wearing mascara ever will be and that taking the time to start the dishwasher before you go to work makes your life exponentially easier than the time taken to struggle into panty hose ever will ...... and that shaving your legs really IS just for Saturday nights out and holidays.
Hibernation is over!
On August 24, my son Kevin and his lovely Devon stood in the middle of a bright, hot, sunny, Sunday morning and before an assemblage of their family and closest friends they earnestly swore to share every bit of themselves with each other, and only with each other, until their death. A weighty promise to journey together into an absolute unknown, the depths of which their young love can only begin to fathom.
As I listened to Kevin promise his life to Devon I felt a familiar sensation wash over me. The same sensation I got when I finally let go of Kevin’s hand so he could take his first steps, walk to school for the first time or drive away in his very first car. Every time that he and I have reached the junction where I have had to let go and hope that my words of wisdom and caution are enough and are still in his ear. And here we are once again at that junction.
As they exchanged vows over their rings their heartbreakingly sincere feelings for one another were there for everyone to read on their faces. I know their vows were spoken from the heart. But aren’t they always? I worried for them as only a heart scarred by a graceless world can worry. I know my path doesn’t have to be theirs. I know their story can be beautiful if they keep their wedding day fresh in their hearts and honor it by never letting go of each other for anything or anyone.
When the newest Mr.& Mrs. Montemayor turned to be introduced for the very first time, my thoughts swirled between wishing I could absorb some of their disappointments and hoping that I’ll have the good fortune to be there to share some their joys. As a mom I wish them every good thing possible. As a woman I selfishly count my blessings for I know their love will serve me too. I watched them walk down the aisle together smiling widely and gave only a cursory nod to the many, tiny, tragedies that I know will dot their life together and I silently sent a message to the angels to ask that those tragedies be far outweighed by great joy … and one more time, I let go and hoped my words of wisdom and caution were enough and were still in his ear.

Redding is very pretty. Lakes, creeks, rivers and the mountains everywhere you look. There’s every kind of shopping and eatery you could ask for … and surprise, surprise, it snows there just enough to be pretty without being an inconvenience. It’s close to every kind of water sport for summer and skiing in the winter … and I know it sound incredibly hokey and un-Jojo like but the people there are universally nice … seriously. It’s a very relaxing environment that has a slower rhythm and I think that’s what makes it easy for people to just be kind to one another. I’m looking forward to the move. In fact, the sooner, the better. Being stretched between two places makes me largely ineffective in both if you know what I mean.

It’s raining today and the wind is blowing so hard that it’s finally blown ALL the leaves off ALL the trees in ALL of Sacramento … and onto the legs of my beige slacks as I walked from the parking lot to the front door of my office building this morning. Charming.
